Keep the beach clean
Capslove Story
The aim of the project is to draw attention to the problem of pollution of beaches and creating pro-ecological attitudes.
Beaches are our common public good, our national heritage. The beach in Sopot, in particular, is frequented by thousands of tourists from Poland and abroad. Crown caps (metal bottle caps) often end up as waste left on the beach. The problem is that they are often buried in the sand and invisible to the service collecting the daily waste left by beach users. There are thousands of crown caps buried on the beach.
Ela Kinowska strolls along the Sopot beach every day. Since July 2021, she has been collecting the caps during her daily walks. She also invited a group of friends to cooperate. They have already collected over 2,500 crown caps. These are both caps found in sand: shiny, colorful, tempting with their brands, and those washed away from the sea: rusty, you can no longer see anything on them except for the rust. These crown caps do not decompose in the environment and are difficult to recycle. Besides cigarette butts, they are a serious problem, although invisible at first glance. Among the collected caps, there are brands of large global companies (Coca-Cola, Heineken) and smaller domestic ones. Beer and refreshing drinks dominate.
The first stage of the project is a photo exhibition which artistically visualizes the crown caps collected on the beach in Sopot. The exhibition will take place in the Gallery of the Gdynia Film Center from 14th to 26th of October 2022.
The project is co-financed by the President of Sopot as part of an artistic scholarship for Sopot based artists.
